We made it. The World didn’t end.

The Mayans Calendar ended this week, which lead people to believe the World was going to end. The only thing it lead people to do was pack into calendar stores yesterday because their Mayan calendar had ended.

I can’t believe that Christmas is in 3 days. It really came up quickly. On Black Friday, I thought that Christmas was so far away…well I guess the old saying is true, “time flies when you work in a mall during the holiday season and have extended hours.”

I will be taking a holiday break from blogging. Probably just posting once or twice a week until after Christmas. This is typically a slow tech news time, at least until CES occurs. Of course I’ll be working on my new 12in12 list. I really enjoy writing and working on those. Not just setting goals, but actually making a plan to accomplish them. But I’ll talk more about my new 12in12 next week, and maybe even some tech predictions for 2013.

What have I been up to this past week? Well my wife, a few friends, and I traveled up to the Big Apple. I had never been to New York for Christmas time. New York is amazing city that I wish I got to see more of, but you can only do so much on a day trip. I got to go into a store in the Plaza full of things that, in this point of my life, I cannot afford. However at the same time, why would I ever wanted to spend $10,000 on a coat?!? My father-in-law lent me his DSLR to take some pics, but I always feel so nervous taking bigger cameras out. Maybe New York isn’t as gritty as 90’s tv shows would have you believe, but it’s the holiday season and I didn’t want to take any chances. Now don’t get me wrong, I did take the camera and I did get some amazing shots. But my camera phones also captured some memories at time where I didn’t feel like pulling the bigger camera out. I can see why the Micro Four Thrids cameras are gaining in popularity. A camera the size of a point and shot but gaining the photography power of a DSLR. Why wouldn’t a novice photographer (and I use that term very loosely) want one?

Speaking of wanting things, I truly dislike Christmas wish lists. I always feel bad trying to write one. Its not that I don’t know what I want. I know exactly what I want. But I feel greedy, when wanting one. I am a nerd and a gadget geek. So the things that I would put on my Christmas list are more money than I would want anyone to spend on me. This isn’t a #HumbleBrag or a Good Guy Greg moment. Its true. I don’t want to have a Micro 4/3rds, an iPad Mini, an Samsung Series 9, and Xbox with Kinect on a Christmas list. People would look at me like I’m crazy and end up getting me some socks. Socks that I would actually enjoy, because you realize that you are getting older when you actually enjoy getting things like socks and wallets for Christmas.

It was a good week. The world didn’t end. I got to go to New York City and then watch Home Alone 2 and point to all the places that I went. My wife watched “It’s A Wonderful Life” for the first time (she didn’t care much for it). My brother celebrated the 13th Anniversary of his 21st birthday. I was going to end with a cool closing line, but I haven’t thought of one yet, so, until next time remember: slow down and enjoy the life that you have.

Merry Christmas!!!

I want this in my house…

My brother-in-law posted that video on his Facebook page and if I couldn’t do this in real life then I would think this was edited and he’s all CGI…but I can clearly do this…

Continuing with the Pumped Up theme, here’s a cover of Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”

What have I been up to this week…or since my last post? A lot of things actually…if you didn’t know or read my tweets (@fortyoneacres), then I’m working on finishing a certification in web design. Looking back, I don’t know why I didn’t major in IT…but we can’t change the past, so I’m working on it now. I’m really excited about this because designing media for the web and technology has always been a love of mine. Lately I’ve been heavily involved in re-learning everything I know and learning new things so this is an exciting time for me. It’s also an exciting time for Princess because her cupcake side business is doing pretty well (I’m working on designing her a site now) and not to mention our 1 year anniversary is coming up, so again more exciting news.

But enough about me…let’s get to some of the tech news of the week.

Pretty tight gadget right here...especially since a lot of newer gadgets are coming to the market keyboad-less. Might make an awesome companion for those who have converted from BlackBerry

– Funny video of an action movie #fail. {College Humor}

– Do you know how awesome this would be if this were the case? Kevin from says the perfect companion to the BlackBerry is the iPad…but I think his tune could change if the BlackPad (I think BlackBoard would be a better name) were running Android.  {DigiTimes: Quanta to make RIM’s BlackPad tablet, runs Android?}

I found this next story interesting because carriers used to tout that they had unlimited data features until AT&T & Verizon decided that they wanted to cap their data features. However this California T-mobile smartphone user has decided to sue his carrier because they throttled his data usage once his data use had reached 10 GB. Now I can understand how this can be upsetting since T-mobile was offering an unlimited plan. Now T-mobile didn’t shut off his internet…just slowed him down. But my question is: What are you doing with your computer to reach 10GB of data use?!? {T-mobile Sued Over Not Unlimited “Unlimited” Data}

– In “Understand What You Download” news, {BBC Creates Malicious Smartphone App}, they embedded a code of spyware inside a game that would gather contact information, copy text messages and log the phone’s current location and then send it to a specific email address. But doing all of this would seriously drain the users battery. It was not said which smartphone the app was built for…but just be careful what you download.

– I’m huge into Twitter, but some of you reading this may not be. This story is for you. {Twitter Introduces Fast Follow Feature} Twitter has rolled out a feature that allows a user to subscribe to twitter streams from your cell phone. If you text “follow <insert user name here>” to 40404, you’ll start recieving that users updates via text message. So before you text “follow fortyoneacres” to 40404 make sure you have an unlimited messaging plan. (I’m sure you could also use it to follow emergency and local news as well…)

[This is a guest post from @jgrunsthecity…I wish I had written it, but I won’t take credit for her great work]

Is Antoine Dodson the real life Lafayette?

If you are not a True Blood Stan like I am you probably don’t get the reference. However you can see the above video for the connection. Now I’m sure we’ve all seen the Antoine Dodson video by now. We’ve seen the remix, the auto-tune, everything. We’ve even seen the follow up video that the news did about the internet sensation that he has become.

Now please don’t take this post as some deep intellectual musing, but just hear my thoughts as they came to me. A lot of people argued that the reason that the intruder got away was because Antoine Dodson is “soft”. Some people were like “he needs to come out of the closet” and his sexuality became a the end of many jokes and the focus of this video. Interestingly enough, via his myspace page, Antoine Dodson clearly admits that he is gay. So there goes that.

But what I find interesting is this idea that if a man is gay then he is no longer a man. Interesting. Many “straight” men have made the extreme mistake of stepping to the wrong gay man and ending up looking up at him from the ground. i.e. the above clip from True Blood. Now Nelson Ellis is not gay, and that was simply acting, but it speaks to a truth we often don’t want to recognize. I think The Wire might have even had a Gay Thug character, but I never saw that show so I won’t comment.

We know that the news is good for putting society’s less “acceptable” members on front street and so this seems to be no different. In this case though, it seemed as though attention was quickly shifted away from the intent of the news piece, a woman was almost raped by an intruder, to a brother who emotionally expressed his feelings. I sincerely feel that had he have made the same comments in DMX’s voice many people would have simply rolled their eyes at the sight of a black person acting the fool on TV and moved on. We can deal with “Ghetto” but “gay” is a whole ‘nother thing. His flamboyancy however made it an internet sensation.

I can’t help but feel that we still cannot grasp the idea that gay men are still very much in fact men, and just like those that sleep with women, they too can be protectors. It goes deeper into the idea that we have a hard time defining masculinity. Some girls talk about wanting the bad boy because they know that he can protect. Or they want the tall man because they will feel safe. All of that to me has little to do with the actual act of protecting someone. If your brother was Antoine Dodson would you immediately discredit his masculinity or his ability to whoop ass simply because he has a fondness for men and fashion? I honestly hope not.

While the video was certainly funny and not funny at the same time, a young sista was assaulted, I think it still brings up some interesting thoughts to consider. I’m sure Antoine is loving his new-found fame just as much as anyone else would, and hopefully, all of this attention will lead investigators (who hopefully are still concerned with the case) to the perps of this crime. According to some of the tweets on his twitter he often makes mention of how they ARE looking for the intruder still.

At the end of the day I guess the point I’m trying to make is that masculinity cannot be simply defined by the sexual orientation of a man, just like femininity cannot be defined by the partners of a woman. “Punks” or men that could not stand up to a flower exist all over the spectrum and I don’t believe it is the cause or the result of homosexuality. Some dudes just don’t have it. Just like some women don’t want kids. Either way it is there perogative and the world keeps on spinning.

To Antoine Dodson I say, yea* I laughed. Your appearances on the video were funny. However I also say “kudos” to you for coming to your sister’s aid and being dedicated to finding the person who did this to her. I have no doubt in my mind that you could kick that fool’s tail.

I know I’m not the only BlackBerry user out there that gets a little excited when they get a bbm only to be blown to realize that the text is in purple. All BlackBerry users know that purple bbm text when they see it: a broadcast message. From reading various tweets, Facebook statuses, and ironicly bbm broadcast messages, and people don’t care to receive broadcast messages. Especially when it’s a chain letter. If I don’t like getting chain letters in the mail, then why would I like them on my phone (especially in my bbm). What makes it worse when people send incorrect information (like most chain letters are). Case in point this bbm that I received from quite a few people the other day…

BBM Broadcast Message

Exhibt A

Now I didn’t send out that broadcast message, yet I already had the symbols. There was nothing to install on your phone and Crackberry already wrote an article about this months ago (link).

Further more we have exhibit B which was received while writing this rant:

Exhibit B

If RIM was to deliver a message to it’s customer base…I don’t believe they would send it in the form of a chain letter BBM message. #CmonSon

So please think before sending out a broadcast message. </rant>

Post Script: Please forgive any spelling errors while in rant mode…

No spaghetti for me please...

“What that means is that I may possibly be posting more randomness here. I doubt it’ll be overly intrusive because I really want this blog to focus on the 12in12 and Technology, but I may branch out into some other factions of me. What this doesn’t mean is that I’ll stop using twitter or Facebook. I’ll try to contain those other musings so they’re not over-loading the rest of the content on the site though. Hopefully you’ll stick around with the site as I make efforts to make it more reflective of me, and as I make efforts to declutter my social networks.”

That was 2 months ago and here I stand with a very similar problem. It can only assume that having multiple things that I want to write about can be seen as a good thing…but I’m finding it to be a gift & curse. Since I want this site to have a focus and I have so many things I want to write about I actually end of not writing anything, which clearly is counter-productive. I want to write. I want to write about various things. I don’t want to write about various things with no focus and have a confused site.

I don't want this to be me...

I remember reading a while back about the different ways of thinking between men & women. The book (or article) stated that men’s minds are like waffles & women’s minds are like a plate of spaghetti. Men tend to compartmentalize things, everything goes into a separate box and need to be in order or else things get confusing and its hard to gain focus. I do not want this space to become a plate of spaghetti. Again (since this is a Part 2) I need to regain focus for what I want this space to be: a site for my technology rants and my 12in12 updates. Granted an off-topic post may surface here every so often but I don’t plan to make a habit of it. Doesn’t butter & syrup flow over a waffle?

I actually took the time (all 47.8 seconds it took me) to write down my social networks. Then I drew a diagram of how those social networks will work with and connect with each other.  So now that I have put my social networks into the organized sections, I should be able to manage and organize my networks so they’re not all over-lapping with the same thing.
